We rejoice that Brother John Nguyen was ordained as a deacon last night (Wednesday, 6th July) by his Capuchin brother, Bishop Bill Fey OFM Cap, of the diocese of Kimbe, Papua New Guinea. The ordination took place while the Capuchin friars from around Australia were gathered for their Mid-term Assembly at St Joseph's Retreat Centre, Baulkham Hills, before a modest gathering of about 200 guests.
Bishop Bill outlined how Br John's ordination to the diaconate, i.e. to service, was in keeping with his vocation as a Capuchin friar i.e. as one who serves, that it would be a step down - not a step up - so as to help lift up his fellow brothers and sisters.
Brother John is known for his management of the Friars' Van ministry to the poor and homeless in Sydney. As deacon he will be assisting on weekends at the Capuchin parish of the Good Shepherd at Plumpton. It is expected that he will be ordained as a priest in early 2017. He will be one of the friars accompanying the Capuchin WYD Pilgrimage to Krakow through Rome, Assisi and Padua - not a bad way to be commencing his clerical ministry. Let us keep Br John in our prayer as he prepares for priestly ordination, as well as the other young men in formation who are following his steps.
